How to store dry fruits for better shelf life

Dry fruits are nutrient-dense foods with multiple health benefits. They are rich in essential minerals, vitamins, proteins, fibres etc, which is why everyone tries to have them in their diet. We often plan to eat dry fruits daily for months and include them in our diet. In order to do that, we end up buying dry fruits in bulk. Buying dry fruits in wholesale ensures good prices but, keeps them at the risk of getting spoilt if not stored properly. You must look to store them in a way that they remain fresh longer. If you are wondering how to do that then here are some important tips to keep in mind while storing nuts. These tips will ensure that your nuts stay fresh longer, keeping their nutritional benefits intact.

1. Use air-tight containers

Once you have opened the dry fruit packets, it is advised to keep nuts in air-tight containers. This ensures limited contact with oxygen and water which can both harm your dry fruits. You can also keep them in a sealed packet if they are available. This will ensure that they remain fresh and crispy and reduce the risk of becoming stale.

2. Store in a cool and dry place

Make sure you store your nuts in a cool and dry place in your kitchen, away from direct sunlight. If you keep them in a place that has direct sunlight then your nuts may go rancid.

3. Toast them

Whenever you feel that your dry fruits may go bad you can toast them either on an oven or a gas stove. This helps keep them free from moisture and keeps them fresh longer. Roasting your nuts is a great option to increase their shelf life.

4. Use opaque glass jars

Dry fruits stay fresh longer in glass jars than plastic ones. Keeping your dry fruits in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight is not enough, keeping them in a glass jar is also necessary. Opaque glass jars are better for storing nuts as they help maintain the temperature inside the jar.

5. Keep them in the freezer

Dry fruits and nuts stay fresh in the freezer. If you wish to increase the shelf life of your dry fruits, then keep them stored in the freezer. Dry fruits can stay fresh for up to 12 months in the freezer.

These were some of the guidelines and tips that you can use to store nuts and dried fruits. Remember, a lot of the freshness will depend on when you purchased the nuts, their quality and the climate or temperature of the region where you live. You can buy fresh dried fruits and nuts from one of the best dry fruits brand "NUTRAJ".
